ESC: U.S., United States

(New thread because ESC's question thread has technical difficulties.) Yes, I've heard of it. "U.S." as a noun is very informal. At a still higher level of formality than AP style, even the adjectival form would be spelled out.

Like I said, I hate to be wrong.

Shouldn't that be, "As I said..."?!?!
