If looks could kill

Does anyone know the origin of the phrase "if looks could kill"?

interesting to note that "Games without frontiers" is the translation of "jeaux sans frontieres" which was the very silly international version of the gameshow "it's a knockout" which wa still being broadcast back then (1980ish).
