: Does anyone know to which war this phrase was first applied?

I've always understood it to be the First World War, which was fought on a grand scale and where mechanization - machine guns and tanks - played an increasingly significant role. Chivalry had been left far behind. I don't know any particular source. Unfortunately, the phrase did not prove true.
