5 X 5 In voice communication describing the volume and quailty of the transmission.

EX:

This is Dyno over to Nello for a radio check over.

This is Nello 5 by 5 Dyno over.

Where 5 by 5 means LOUD and CLEAR. 1 x 5 would clear by barely adudible.

On this weeks episode, they kept saying the phrase "five-by-five," which it appeared they were using in response to the question, "are you alright?" I'm not sure what the actual meaning of the phrase is... can someone please clear this one up?

They might have been saying "Ten Four," in which case, it means "Yes." I didn't see the episode though. In fact, I've never seen an episode. Oh well.
