WHO SAID "AH THE PITY YOUTH IS WASTED ON THE YOUNG

George Bernard Shaw.

when and why did Shaw use it??

I have looked through ALL my quote books and can't find where, when and how Shaw said it. However, I did find a reference to the quote:

It's that second time you hear your love song sung,
Makes you think perhaps, that
Love like youth is wasted on the young.

The Second Time Around - 1960 song. Sammy Cahn (Samuel Cohen). Music by James Van Heusen.

I've found a lot of sites on the web that attribute that quote to GBS, but none that say when or under what circumstances he said it.

But a related paraphrasing is "Aw, youth is wasted on the wrong people!", by the grumpy old man on the porch in It's a Wonderful Life , when George doesn't kiss Mary quickly enough.
