Where, when and how did this saying come about?

Guess. From boxing. Outside the boxing ring, when someone's knocked out they tend to be dragged away from the scene, thereby 'cleaning' the floor.

My guess is that it is pretty old( maybe even older than boxing) because there is a German saying that means the same:

"Mit jmdn den Boden abwischen."
