Back of beyond

What is the origin of "back of beyond?"

My usderstanding is that it refers to the Australian outback. Many far out lonely places are called by this name or a variation of it........ although there is a simply beautiful and splendid living area in the red rock area south of Sedona, Arizona full of $2 and $3 million dollar houses -- and it's called Back o' Beyond. Lots of people would like to be in that particuar place.

Thanks Ward. I had heard it used many years ago in Ireland and thought it had a British or Irish origin. Any help from over there?
