Those vs them

Posted by Lotg on October 29, 2003

I notice that Americans seem to use 'those' where I would normally use 'them'. eg. I would like to have those, vs I would like to have them, or... a lot like those, vs a lot like them. I'm sorry to say I think these are lousy examples, but I can't remember precise examples off the top of my head.

Anyway, I can see grammatical justification for the word 'those', as you could assume there might be an extension to the sentence such as 'I would like to have those... say items', as opposed to simply saying I would like to have them.

I just don't know if it's technically correct to end such a sentence with 'those'.

Help me out here guys. What would be more correct and am I right in saying this type of sentence is more commonly used in the U.S.?
