Albatross around your neck

Can you please tell me the meaning of this phrase, and where it comes from? Thank you - SAX

It's from Coleridge's "Rime of theAncient Mariner," and it's the punishment dealt out .... but wait, it's a good story. Read the whole thing at

Suffice it to say, hanging an albatross around your neck is a huge problem, since the albatross is the largest (and heaviest) sea bird.
