Got the red ass

Does anyone know where the phrase "got the red ass" might have come from. It is used to connote someone getting his dander up, i.e., "He got the red a** and began telling everyone off". ANY help would be appreciated. I am in Louisiana and I think that it might be a regional saying. Has anyone else heard this one before?

I'm from Boston and I never heard that so I am assuming its regional. Educated guess though, guessing its along the lines of "that really burns my ass" which would give one a red a** and seams to fit the usage.
