Could anyone tell me what the following bracketed phrase means?

Each of these developments (spoke in a different way to public scepticism) about the ideal of realizing 'the plain truth' on the pages of a newspaper.

Each of these developments had a different message concerning the doubts of people in general about whether it was possible for a newspaper to report events without distortion.
