Go figure

Where did the phrase "go figure" come from and what
does it mean (really)?

I don't know where it comes from. "Figure" means to solve a problem by thinking about it. So when one comes upon a situation that's astounding, it's necessary to go and try to figure it out. "Go figure." Go try and understand why such a situation exists. Or why in the world a person would act in a certain manner.
