Stop on a dime

Posted by S. Ryan on March 06, 2003

I found no follow-up to this query in the archives, so maybe another try will be successful.
I have heard and used the expression "stop on a dime and give you nine cents change," and understand that this has also bridged the ocean to the UK, as in "stop on a sixpence..." Can anybody help with its origin?
