If a man put out the eye of another man, his eye shall be put out.

This is usually interpreted as 'an eye for an eye' and is taken from the Code of Hammurabi, Babylonian king around 1790 BC. Many of the codes were incorporated into later texts and laws, including those of the Judeo-Christian movement.
