"Laughter is the Best Medicine"

Any idea who first came up with "laughter is the best medicine"? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

That was the title of a Reader's Digest magazine column. But I'm sure it had an earlier origin. I haven't found it in my references though.

There's a verse in the Bible that is very similar: "A cheerful heart is good medicine" Proverbs 17:22
