If it was a donkey

can anybody tell me where the saying "if it was a donkey we'd all have a ride" came from please.

It sounds akin to: "If wishes were horses, beggars would ride..." Search archives under "wishes" for more discussion.

Or, more crudely, "if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle" - all relating to the futility of hypotheses and wishful thinking
