The evil that men do...

Many years ago I came upon a motorcycle that was highly customized, but the most beautiful thing on this piece of iron was the saying that was inscribed on the gas tank....it went something like this:
"So soon the good that man has done forgotten, the bad forever remembered" not an exact quote. Does anyone know what that phrase or quote is ? Help!!
