Origin and meaning of "Dining with the Devil"

"Dining with the Devil" What does it mean?

That you're undertaking a risky path, one which might just succeed but most likely will fail. Success=Heaven. Failure=Hell (and the Devil as well!).
Alternatively, some will say that the path you're on is quasi, or actually, criminal.
