I think it is the same as the "Hunter's Moon" that occurs in October. It was named the Hunters moon because the bright light helps hunters see during the night which could also benefit a sailor.
I am not 100% on this so maybe someone else has the whole nine on it.

Blue moon - 2 full moons in 1 month
