BREAD AND MILK SYNDROME - The urge to rush to the store and stock up on provisions when the weatherman predicts a winter storm. From a Byron Crawford column, Louisville (Ky.) Courier Journal, Dec. 6, 2002.

That happens often in the UK prior to longish national holidays, such as Christmas. The size of the shopping trollies is such as to make you think the world is coming to an end!
