Get run over

Does anyone know the meaning of "get run over"?

In this case:

"We know what happens to people who stay in the middle of the road. They get run over."

Getting run over means being in a traffic accident. A car or other vehicle will "run over" (knock down and drive over the body of) a person standing in the road.

Figuratively, your sentence can mean that when one does not pursue a definite course of action, one pays a price.
