Mel Gibson - Bird On A Wire

Can anybody help!!

I'm trying to find a song from the above film for my uncle's funeral.

It plays when Mel Gibson comes over the hill on his motorbike and it goes "like a bird.........free.........as a bird, free!"
Please can somebody tell me the name and musician of this track????

Not exactly the lyrics you posted but kinda close:

Bird On A Wire by Leonard Cohen, Performed by one of the Neville Brothers?

Like a bird on the wire,
like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.
Like a worm on a hook,
like a knight from some old fashioned book
I have saved all my ribbons for thee.
If I, if I have been unkind,
I hope that you can just let it go by.
If I, if I have been untrue
I hope you know it was never to you.

Like a baby, stillborn,
like a beast with his horn
I have torn everyone who reached out for me.
But I swear by this song
and by all that I have done wrong
I will make it all up to thee.
I saw a beggar leaning on his wooden crutch,
he said to me, "You must not ask for so much."
And a pretty woman leaning in her darkened door,
she cried to me, "Hey, why not ask for more?"

Oh like a bird on the wire,
like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.

There's a great version by Joe Cocker.

Though my all-time favourite movie site (www.imdb.com) has fractionally let me down (in that surprisingly it doesn't give a soundtrack listing for this movie), in the credits listed there, it refers separately to both Leonard Cohen and someone called Aaron Neville - maybe there's two different versions of the song used in the movie?

... and from my all-time favourite music site (www.allmusic.com), here's a URL showing every album they know about that features a song called "Bird On A Wire". At least 25 out of the 34 versions shown there have been authored by Leonard Cohen, though a fair few artists have covered the track, including the aforementioned Joe Cocker, Fairport Convention (!) and Johnny Cash (!!). Hope this helps your search.
