to fall between two stools

How about this phrase? is there another idiom that has the same meaning.

It's probably an apocryphal story, but it amused me...

When Winston Churchill was learning to fly there was a mixup between him and his instructor as to who was actually handling the controls, and the aeroplane started to plummet. He described it as "stalling between two fools".
