::::Actually, I believe the proper origin does come from fabric measurement. In the old days, wealthy women who wanted fuller dresses asked for more fabric. However, this was a very expensive procedure, thus many women could not afford it. The wealthiest of them all would ask for "THE WHOLE NINE YARDS" of fabric. The end.
