Excellent women

Just finished reading Barbara Pym's Excellent Women. That phrase is thrown around so much, I wondered if it actually referred a specific type of woman, if it was a phrase used in general, not just by Pym.

This is a guess. But it sounds like a slogan or credo of a women's college. Kind of like the Marines' "a few good men."
