Pray tell where that one started....

I am not sure about the origin of "made in the shade." But a character in a play, speaking about lemonade, said, "Made in the shade, stirred with a spade and good enough for any old maid." Or something like that. The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams (1911-1983.
