I am trying to research the origin of this quotation from "Rumpole of the Bailey." I have a bet with my sister-in-law who says that he made up the phrase. I say it is from English literature. Please help us settle this bet.

It's from the novel "She" written by Henry Rider Haggard, first appearing in serial form in 1886. It was first published as a novel in 1887. Henry Rider Haggard dies in 1925.
