Origins of "up the duff"

In Scotland we are all familiar with the euphemism for being pregnant "up the duff"
I don't know whether this is an expression widely used in England as well.
My sister who now lives in California and is indeed " up the duff" has been trying to explain to the Americans where it came from but realised she doesn;t know it's origins either.
Can anyone enlighten us?
