The madness astounds afresh each day

I am not 100% sure how it goes. It says something along the lines of 'The madness astounds afresh each day - that any man would choose to go to sea" (or possibly 'go on a sea voyage'). I seem to remember it was from an (American?) author in the late 18th or early 19th century. Can anyone help?
