**** or go blind

"He/she didn't know whether to **** or go blind." I've heard this phrase all of my life and it seems to mean that the person speaking it is perplexed and/or faced with a dilemma of sorts. It is commonly used in "my neck of the woods" -Southeast Texas- and most of our residents are familiar with it but not its origin or literal meaning. Can you help? Thanks!
