Dead Ringer

Posted by Duane on March 21, 2005

In the game of horseshoe pitching when using cancellation scoring, a ringer that tops an opponent's ringer cancels both ringers from scoring and they are called "dead ringers"....usually the call is "two dead ringers, 1 point" or "three ringers, 3 points" so the scorekeeper can mark the scoresheet, giving each pitcher credit for one dead ringer and 1 point for a second shoe lying closest to the stake or 3 points and credit for a second ringer that was not cancelled. The total number of ringers (live and dead) is divided by the number of shoes pitched to calculate each pitcher's "ringer average" which is used as a measure of skill.
