I also remember it being "off of" and as bad as that sounds, "off from" sounds even worse. I believe that in either case, it should just be "off". I recall there being a grammatical rule against putting two prepositions right next to one another. BTW, a previous discussion of "off of" can be accessed by typing "off of" in the search box above.
