R. S. Thomas was born in 1913 and is regarded as the pre-eminent Welsh poet writing in the English language. As Thomas notes in his affectionate portrait of eighty-five year old Job Davies ("Lore," Selected Poems 68):

Rhythm of the long scythe
Kept this tall frame lithe.

What to do? Stay green.
Never mind the machine,
Whose fuel is human souls.
Live large, man, and dream small.
