It means that if you report anything less than the truth, if you embellish stories or leave out information (i.e. start messing with the truth), even if it is in the service of good cause, you are just as morally wrong as the people whose conduct you disagree with (I'm assuing here that the writer thinks most journalists would not want to be on the same side as the secret police in a repressive regime).
