"Cut Yourself a Piece of Cake"

Posted by Don Gregory on May 11, 2003

On a cursory examination of the archive, I don't find references to the expression "a piece of cake" going back beyond the 1930's. I have an old 78rpm record entitiled "Cut Yourself a Piece of Cake" and its recording date was definitely sometime in the 1920's. The lyrics are about a man named Jones who married a woman unable to cook anything except cake. To all of their family problems (which included Jones losing his job and being unable to pay the rent), her response was "Cut yourself a piece of cake and make yourself at home." Of course, the expression was meant literally.
